작가노트

나는 오랫동안 사람이 스스로의 신체와 주고받는 영향에 대한 그림을 그렸습니다.

최근에는 감각 차원, 감정 차원에서 주변 환경이 사람에게 끼치는 영향에 대한 작품을 그리고 있습니다.

내년에도 이러한 탐구를 계속할 계획입니다.

가장 최근의 작품들은 훨씬 더 개인적인 주제를 다룹니다.

저는 스스로의 불안, 집착, 기분을 드러내는 작품을 그리기 위해 제 몸과 환경에서 영감을 받습니다.

스튜디오란 개인적인 주제를 자유롭게 탐구할 수 있는 안전한 장소입니다.

타인의 비판과는 거리가 먼, 지극히 사적인 장소입니다.

스튜디오에서 작품을 가져다가 전시하는 것은 신뢰에 기반을 둔 행동입니다.

저는 보다 개인적인 작업들을 창작하고 전시하기에, 전시라는 행동에 더 깊은 의미가 담겨있습니다.

제가 이번 전시에서 탐구하고자 하는 것은, 작가와 관람객을 위해 스튜디오에서 작업을 가져오는 과정 전반을 포함한 것입니다.

스튜디오에 남는 작품들은 실패라고 생각할 수 있습니다. 혹은 너무 사적이어서 전시하고 싶지 않은 것일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 제 작품 중에서는 되려 이러한 작품들이 제가 통상 타인에게 보여주기 위해 전시하는 작품보다 더 강렬한 인상을 줄 수도 있습니다.

과거의 작업들은 종종 개인적인 주제를 다루지 않고, 그보다는 주제에 관해서 좀 더 보편적인 접근을 하고자 하였습니다.

앞으로는 작업에 더욱더 개인적이고 사적인 의미를 부여하고자 노력할 계획입니다.

Niall Craven

My work has, for a longtime, been focussed on the human body and our relationship we have to it. Recently I have been turning my attention to the effects our surroundings have on us, in various sensory and emotional aspects. In the coming year I plan to continue this inquiry. My most recent work has been intensely personal, drawing on my own body and environment to produce work that exposes my own anxieties, preoccupations and emotions.

The studio provides a safe place for me to follow these strands in my work, a private place away from the scrutiny and judgement of other people. Taking a work out of the studio and exhibiting it is an act of trust. The development and exhibiting of more personal works gives this act of exhibition more meaning to me.

This is what I want to explore for this exhibition, the act of taking a work from the studio and everything that it encompasses, for the artist and for the viewers. Works that might otherwise remain in the studio are often deemed ‘failures’ or are too deeply personal to be shown to an audience, but this kind of work, which my paintings often follow, is sometimes more intense than the kind of work I show to others.

My work in the past has often avoided the personal, instead taking a more general approach to my subjects. Inthefuture I wish to inject my work again with this intimate, personal meaning.
