[작가노트]
이번전시 사진작품 시리즈 ‘샹들리에’
“실”은 지금까지 그녀의 조형 작품의 주요 주제이지만, “샹들리에”시리즈는 암흑 속에서 얽히고 설킨 온갖 색깔의 무수히 가는 실을 촬영한 사진 작품이다. 한국과 일본의 견사의 실타래를 일단 풀어 다시 얽히고 꼬이게 해 늘어뜨렸다. 그것은 전쟁이 일어나기 전에 대전에서 태어나고 성장 해, 패전후 귀환한 전후의 일본국내에서겪은 차별을 연상시킨다. 그것은 한반도 태생임을 말하지 못하고 살아온 사람들의 간단히 풀어낼 수 없는 기억의 뒤엉킴이다. 인터뷰에 응한 평균 연 령80세의 일본인들은 태어나고 자란 「고향」과 「일본 (사람) 」이라는 국가적인 틀 사이에서 70 년 끌 리고 찢겨오며 살아왔을 것이다. 또한 얽혀있는 “실 뭉치 ‘의 형형색색의 화려함을 보면, 대전이 라는 도시로 이주하고, 오가고, 떠나 간 수 많은 사람들의 삶의 궤적이 교차하는 모습이 떠오른 다. 그것은 뒤엉키고 휘감긴 복잡한 양국의 역사의 은유이면서, 대전이 철도 건설의 거점으로 만 들어진 도시인 것을 생각하면 제국주의의 욕망과 함께 확장되어가는 선로의 동맥류처럼 부풀어 오른 욕망의 모습으로 보이기도 한다. 개인의 기억과 국가적 욕망, 미크로 / 마크로의 다층적인 의 미와 은유가 겹치면서, 일의적으로 좁혀진 의미의 결정을 거부하는 곳에, “샹들리에”시리즈가 지닌 예술작품으로서의 매력의 가능성이 있다. – 다카시마 메구미 (비평중 일부분 발췌)

In this exhibition Bae presents her photographic series ‘Chandelier’
‘Thread’ has been a central motif to Bae’s creative work, and she now tackles the same subject in a photographic series depicting countless numbers of entangled, colorful threads of Korean and Japanese silk. These are symbolic of the complex memories of those who were raised in pre-war Daejeon, survived the war, witnessed defeat, then eventually returned to Japan only to face harsh discrimination because of their Korean backgrounds and forced to maintain low profiles. The average age of those interviewed by Bae was 80, and they spoke of the emotional difficulty of having to live with a dual identity for over 70 years, as ‘Japanese’ nationals with a string nostalgic attachment to their ‘Korean’ hometown. Looking at these colorfully entangled bundles of threads one imagines the countless, anonymous trajectories of the lives of those who came and went through Daejeon city. The images also present us with the complex history of both countries, and Daejeon’s historical role at the centre of an invasive transport network that eventually became entangled and bloated with imperial desire. Because of this micro/macro contrast between personal narratives and nationalist urges, Bae’s ‘Chandelier’ series unravels multiple layers of meaning and metaphor. In the ambiguity of the image and Bae’s refusal to commit to any single minded interpretation, we can also see art’s true creative potential.
